QUESTIONS ABOUT THE GAME

What EXACTLY do I need to play the game?

    The game consists of:

    • A set of tiles (we suggest a set of 160 tiles, 2 rolling dice for American Mahjong)
    • 4 tiles racks - acrylic or wood are great!
    • 1 Mahjong playing mat
    • 4 Mahjong playing cards | We really think you will love ours.
    • 4 players! Although you can play with 3, the more the merrier!

A detailed blog post containing product suggestions and links can be found here.

How on earth do I set up my game to play?

    • We created a video you can watch here on how to exactly set up the perfect game!
    • Our blog post here also breaks down exact instructions with pictures on how to set up.

What are the blank tiles I see in my set and what do they do?

Blank tiles are one of our favorite house-rule additions! These special tiles can be used at any point during the game to swap for a tile you need from the discard pile. Simply turn in your blank tile and secretly replace it with the discarded tile of your choice.

Be sure to agree on blank tile rules with your group before the game begins so everyone is playing the same way! The more research you do, the more you will find different variations of rules/game suggestions.

What is the Charleston process and when do we do it in our game?

The Charleston is a tile swap that happens before the game starts.

The Charleston is done right after the tiles are dealt and before the first turn.

    Each player passes 3 tiles:

    • First pass: Right
    • Second pass: Across
    • Third pass: Left

After these 3 passes, players may do:

    • A Second Charleston (another round of right, across, and left passes), if everyone agrees. Game starts if even one player disagrees.
    • A Courtesy Pass, where two players exchange up to 3 tiles.

The Charleston helps players improve their hand before the first turn.

What happens when my walls of tiles run out?

If all the tiles in the walls are drawn and no player has declared Mahjong, the game ends! This is called a wall game (sometimes called a draw or no game).

The tiles are shuffled and a new game begins.

Jokers! What can I do with them? What I cannot?

What you can do with Jokers:

    • May be used in any Pung, Kong or Quint of identical tiles (completed sequence of 3 or more tiles)
    • May be claimed from an exposure if replaced with the exact matching tile
    • May be used in a run of flowers or dragons

What you cannot do with Jokers:

    • Used in a single or a pair
    • Be used in groupings that represent winds (NEWS) or RUNS of any kinds
    • Cannot be traded during the Charleston exchanges
    • Cannot be claimed when discarded, the Joker is essentially dead when discarded and cannot be switched out with a blank tile

How do I call a tile?

A tile may only be called immediately after it is discarded. To claim a tile, clearly announce, “I want it!”

Need a moment to decide? You may pause play by saying, “Hold.” If you choose not to take the tile, resume the game by saying, “Pass" to continue.

When claiming a tile, you must immediately display the complete exposure before discarding a tile from your rack.

You may only call a tile for single tiles, pairs, NEWS combinations, years, and other non-identical tile groups when declaring Mahjong and cannot be claimed to create an exposure.

2 players want a discarded tile! Who gets it?

The next player in turn has preference, unless the other player is declaring Mahjong.
