So you’re about to play your first Mahjong game! How exciting! My Mahjong journey started shortly after having my baby, when I kept hearing about the game everywhere. Curious (and a little sleep-deprived), I one night asked my husband, Jax, in the kitchen to look it up and explain it to me. Not long after, a close friend and neighbor invited us over, pulled out her set, and taught us how to play in just a couple of hours. I was instantly hooked—and surprisingly, my husband loved it too. A winning combination in my book.
Looking back on my journey (and still very much learning the game over time) if I could go back and read one quick list of everything I wish I knew before playing, it would look something like this:
You will feel slow at first—and that’s normal. Everyone around the table was once a beginner too. Speed comes naturally with repetition.
Watching others play is part of learning. Pay attention between your turns. You’ll pick up patterns and strategy faster than you expect.
